Růžena Mašková, Jakub Tomašík, Adam Rössler (Czech Republic)
The 2020 Beirut explosion occurred on 4 August 2020, when a large amount of ammonium nitrate stored at the Port of Beirut in the capital city of Lebanon exploded, causing at least 218 deaths, 7,000 injuries, and US$15 billion in property damage, and leaving an estimated 300,000 people homeless.

Cargo of 2,750 tonnes of the substance (equivalent to around 1.1 kilotons of TNT) had been stored in a warehouse without proper safety measures for the previous six years after being confiscated by the Lebanese authorities from the abandoned ship MV Rhosus. The explosion was preceded by a fire in the same warehouse, but as of September 2021, the exact cause of the detonation is still investigated.

The Silos will transfer data and visitors horizontally and vertically similar to how it transferred grain while presenting an image of ruins that retains its identity as a survivor of the blast. Around the Silos, there will be an expo representing Lebanon with pedestrianized public outdoor areas.

In place of the 4 destroyed warehouses, there will now be an immersive outdoor world allowing visitors to build their own virtual spaces in a collective re-imagining of the built environment.

The main objective is to improve the connection and communication between the port and the city. The strategies to achieve this include a system of parks and promenades that offer public and recreational spaces. A pedestrian bridge links the project area with the urban zone.

In addition, a pedestrian street connects this bridge with the Downtown´s central square and, from there, it continues north back to the port, and south towards the Horsh Beirut park. A bikeway follows these paths. Likewise, circulation systems for public transport are proposed. These include defined routes of buses and trams that leave from the “Charles Helou” main station.

Antanios Habib (Lebanon)
The proposed motorway that will connect Linord with the capital in the future will cross this district and divide it into three zones. And as a lack of green space is present then it is conceived to increase the percentage of green, hence the idea of creating an urban park connecting these three poles of interaction. In addition, the decision to take this highway into consideration will be justified:

1. to avoid urban problems and fragmentation during the future execution of this highway especially now that the land is raw and ready. 2. by a possibility of transforming Avenue Charles Helou into a Boulevard fitted out with service areas and paths for pedestrians and bicycles … consequently an opportunity to offer spatial equality to this place and has amplified its potential.

The project’s goal is to reproduce the reverberation of the explosion in order to heal and repair what it destroyed. This plan and design will take into account the most effective way to return Beirut’s income generator to its previous glory.

The new design of reverberation modifies the port for the capital’s future with the concept, and we would want to generate commercial activities strategically situated around the port region. The main purpose is to add non-traditional enterprises to the port by reusing fragments shapes from the explosion to help in the reconstruction of Beirut’s port.

Pia Maria Saber (Lebanon)
This Project is divided into different zones. The marine terminal, designed for travelers to enhance the tourism in Lebanon. The Water zone, that offers exclusive rights to explore, exploit, preserve and manage resources. As well it allows encountering with marine species. This area is defined by an aquarium, an informative experience space, a play area with water fountains for children and themed snacks on different levels so as not to block the view of the Mediterranean sea.

The Land zone: Nature is a common good of humanity; it should therefore, be respected by all, because it has a unique heritage value. Ephemeral and temporary exhibition, allows the Lebanese to familiarize themselves with nature and the area is dedicated as well to planting and picking. So this land space is to plant the seeds of peace and hope. Source and images Courtesy of INSPIRELI AWARDS.
