Art in and within the design: Sullivan+Strumpf takes on Melbourne with Flack Studio
Designed by Flack Studio, Sullivan+Strumpf’s Melbourne Gallery will open in October 2022 with a major solo exhibition by Tony Albert, Remark – a follow up to his 2021 exhibition, Conversations with Margaret Preston.

Indeed, Sullivan+Strumpf’s stable of leading contemporary Australian and Asia Pacific artists is impressive – including Lindy Lee, Polly Borland, Ramesh Mario Nithiyendran, Tony Albert, Angela Tiatia, Alex Seton, and Darren Sylvester.
Never shy to explore new territory, Sullivan+Strumpf artist Natalya Hughes’ exhibition, The Interior, at the Institute of Modern Art in Brisbane (until 1 October 2022) combines furniture and furnishings in an extraordinary installation of colour and movement. (Her solo exhibition These Girls of The Studio, will open at Sullivan+Strumpf Sydney, September 22 to October 15.)
In the same line, for The Melbourne Design Fair, the gallery presented the work of three female Australian artists: Sanne Mestrom, Natalya Hughes and Kirsten Coelho, with each artist using design as a means of exploring materiality, architecture and form. Mestrom’s sculptural tables were also on show at the Melbourne Art Fair.
On now at Sullivan+Strumpf Sydney, Singaporean artist Dawn Ng’s solo exhibition Into Air explores how we hold time in an ephemeral object, in a series of photo portraits, residue paintings and time-lapse films capturing the journey of colour through ice. The fourth and final iteration of this major presentation, Into Air has toured from Singapore to Seoul and London and will run in Sydney until September 10.

Opening Thursday August 25, Archibald Prize winner Yvette Coppersmith presents her first solo show in six years and one of her most significant bodies of work to date. Inspired by the legacies of Roger Kemp and the Ballet Russes, Presage is an homage to colour and movement created in collaboration with renowned Australian fashion photographer Bronwyn Kidd and featuring an original soundtrack by Melbourne artist and musician Roslyn Orlando.
Founded in 2005 in Sydney, Sullivan+Strumpf quickly established itself as one of Australia and the Asia Pacific’s leading contemporary art galleries. In 2016 they were the first Australian gallery to establish a permanent presence in Asia at Singapore’s Gillman Barracks.
They have since pivoted to a more agile Singapore operation in response to COVID-19, continuing to present exhibitions and events and facilitating international opportunities, including recent exhibitions in Jakarta, Seoul and London. Their live program is supplemented by expertly crafted digital and printed content including curated digital exhibitions and bi-monthly magazine.
Sullivan+Strumpf also regularly consults to major public and private museums, and acts in an advisory capacity to public and private collections internationally.
